Estonia

Estonia is a tiny ex-Soviet republic at the gates of the Baltic Sea. Its proximity to Finland and to the Scandinavian Peninsula marks the history, culture and the language of the country.

Estonia has good economical background compared to that of other ex-Soviet republics and is a hopeful future member of the European Union.

The Söderström Foundation has a few projects in Estonia but the usual educational scholarships are to start in January 2003. Currently we have only eight students from Estonia here in Stockholm, they are participating in exchange courses in sociology for 6 months.

Public Education in Estonia:

Compared to the size of the country and the heavy burden of being an ex-Soviet colony and republic, Estonia has a fairly effective public education sector.

The main problem for them is the lack of state funds, which results in the massive immigration of the best teachers. Teacher salaries in Estonia are very law, but compared to neighbouring Latvia, Lithuania or Russia they still make about 3 times better.

Higher Education:

A considerable difficulty lies in the lack of funds for scientific researches (which parenthetically is a most current problem in E. Europe), but the system still works and fundamentally most of the students that come out of Estonian universities have a compatible skill and knowledge.
